Why Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Dog?

Valentine’s Day is not just for couples. It’s a day of love, and who better to share it with than our loyal dogs?

Our furry friends deserve the same recognition on this day dedicated to expressing affection. Dogs offer unconditional love and companionship, making them the perfect Valentine.

Acknowledge the loyalty and joy they bring. Make this day memorable by planning activities that both you and your dog will enjoy.

It’s not just about walks and treats; it’s about cherishing the bond and creating moments together.

If you don’t have time to get into all the details right now, save the below idea check-list for later.

And remember, celebrating Valentine’s Day with your dog doesn’t call for extravagance. Rather, it’s the sentiment that counts and the shared joy between you and your pup.

Personally, I’m always so presently surprised at how Phoebe, Franklin, and Froda absolutely love even the simplest of new activities that we try together!

Easy and Eco-Friendly Ways To Spend Valentine’s Day with Your Dog

Embark on an Adventure

A ‘sniffari’ is an easy and free way to turn a simple walk into an adventure. It lets dogs use their powerful noses as they explore the outdoors at their own pace. You choose a location where your dog can safely wander and sniff to their heart’s content.

Local parks and hiking trails are perfect for this. They are often safe and rich with natural scents.

This kind of activity engages your dog’s senses and provides both mental stimulation and physical exercise.

Phoebe, Franklin, and Froda all love to follow their noses. And I love to see them so involved in the simple pleasures of life!

Engage in Eco-Friendly Playtime

This Valentine’s Day, consider eco-friendly toys for your dog. These products not only last longer but also help protect the environment.

Choose toys made from sustainable materials like olive wood, natural resin, natural nylon, natural rubber, organic cotton, and hemp.

Xtra Eco Tip: When shopping, look for labels that carry the B Corp Certification. B Corp businesses are certified by B Lab, a non-profit organization, and meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact, accountability, and transparency. And, FYI, the ‘B’ stands for ‘Benefit for all’.

If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few eco-friendly options.

And if you haven’t heard of Pet Impact or Hundson Houndstooth yet, these are two very cool, small, sustainable pet businesses that you should definitely check out!

Alternatively, get creative and make a toy yourself. You’d be surprised at just how easy it is to make toys out of old socks! And my dogs absolutely love them!

A DIY approach lets you not only craft a unique gift but also gives an unused item a second life rather than a trip to the landfill.

Xtra Eco Tip: If you don’t have unwanted socks, you can also repurpose old clothes or use stuffing from worn-out dog toys. The goal is to reuse things you already have and avoid using new, non-biodegradable materials.

Plan the Pawfect Spa Day

Organic spa products for dogs (and their humans) offer a great way to celebrate. Choose ones that are gentle and non-toxic.

If your pups are anything like mine, they will adore this extra pampering. And it’s a great excuse for you to pamper yourself as well!

Cook Up Some Love

Whipping up a homemade treat doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, many of the recipes I’ve tested with my pups are made with only a couple of simple, natural ingredients.

And that includes this fun and easy recipe I’ve created especially for Valentine’s Day. With just 3 ingredients, you can make a box of mixed chocolates that are 100% dog-friendly!

Xtra Health Tip: Always check with your veterinarian before introducing new foods. Like people, all dogs are different, and their tolerance for these ingredients depends on numerous factors including age, allergies, health conditions, and more.

And do my dogs love a homemade treat! They see us humans in the kitchen all the time cooking for ourselves. So when they know I’m crafting something just for them, I´m sure it is very meaningful.

Now don’t get me wrong…they are incredibly impatient!

But they also love being involved in the process as quality assurance managers, and their eyes absolutely light up when they finally get to taste the finished product.

Xtra Health Tip: Whenever serving treats, remember the 90/10 rule. At least 90% of your pup’s daily calories should come from balanced meals, leaving no more than 10% for the fun stuff.

Alternatively, take your dog out to eat at a dog-friendly restaurant.

This one takes a little bit of coordination. And you’ll want to ensure you’re dog is prepared and happy for such an activity, as I discuss in my post on dining out with dogs here.

With a few steps and considerations, this can be such a wonderful and unique time together.

Planning with Pawsitivity

Know your dog’s likes and dislikes. This is the starting point for any good Valentine’s plan. Your dog’s happiness acts as the compass for your activity roadmap.

Start with what they love, whether it’s a long walk or a hearty game of fetch. Combining their favorite pastimes with this day of affection nurtures your bond. It also ensures their tail keeps wagging from start to finish.

Avoid stress triggers. Valentine’s should not include anxiety-filled experiences for your pup. For example, if congested places or loud noises unsettle your pup, choose a quieter location.

Also, don’t get caught up in the temptation of clichés. Dressing up your pet (if this is something they don’t enjoy) or buying a cute, but cheap toy that will be destroyed in a single afternoon may seem like a good idea at the moment.

Fortunately, there are many easy and practical ways to make more thoughtful choices for your pup and the planet.

Remember, the best plans honor your dog’s natural inclinations, avoid stress, and help you truly enjoy the time together. (And treats…Froda wants me to say that the best plans also include treats).
