The Search for Sustainable Dog Treats

When it comes to buying dog treats, the options seem endless. And in this sea of endless options, not all are created equal. Many cheap and poor-quality treats not only lack nutritional value for pets but also fail to support any kind of sustainable practices.

I won’t lie and tell you that I’ve never fed my dogs any of these cheap treats. But over the years, I have become a lot more conscious of what I feed my pups, considering both their health and the health of our planet.

And, luckily, there are some really cool pet food companies that are focused on creating conscientious products. However, speaking from experience, I know it’s not always easy to find them.

So, after a lot of research, I have for you my first round-up of sustainable dog treats for your pup to try. The companies that create them all have a similar origin story.

They were founded by pet parents who sought healthier and more responsible options for their beloved furry best friends.

And these pet parents have gone on to create successful, inspirational businesses that genuinely care for the health of pets AND have documented sustainability plans in place. As part of their core strategy, they tread as lightly as possible on our beautiful planet.

Note that these options are mainly available in Europe, although I have at times seen them available on Amazon in the US as well.

Leave me a comment if you are outside of Europe and looking for some good, natural options from sustainable dog treat companies. I’ll do the research and let you know!

Edgard & Cooper

This Belgian-based company was started by a couple of friends and fellow dog parents wanting nutritious food for their pups that also “played nice with nature”. Their mission today? To become the world’s most sustainable pet company!

Sustainable Steps

Edgard & Cooper, a certified B Corp, is committed to reducing its environmental pawprint through various sustainability initiatives.

In addition to actively supporting animal charities to help pets in need, the company has laid out a Zero Pawprint Plan to achieve a better planet by 2025.

Xtra Eco Tip: Look for labels that carry the B Corp Certification. B Corp businesses are certified by B Lab, a non-profit organization, and meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact, accountability, and transparency. And, FYI, the ‘B’ stands for ‘Benefit for all’.

The Zero Pawprint Plan encompasses three main objectives: greenhouse gas reduction, 100% closed-loop packaging, and ethical sourcing of all ingredients.

Although the job isn’t done yet, Edgard & Cooper’s packaging is already easy to recycle, made from paper and bioplastic derived from potatoes. And as of 2021, all its treat and food bags can go directly into the paper recycling bin.

And ethical sourcing of ingredients is already a high priority. The company adheres to an animal welfare policy, selecting MSC and ASC-certified fish for its recipes, along with grass-fed lamb and free-run chicken.

Treat Options

Edgard & Cooper’s treats are made from natural, fresh ingredients. And the recipes were developed through several years of research in collaboration with a university.

The treats come in a variety of flavors, combining proteins of beef, chicken, lamb, and duck with fruits and vegetables.

Options include:

  • Top Dog Bites: small, high-value training treats packed with flavor
  • Bravo Biscuits: crunchy treats for a snack or reward
  • Snuggle Up Strips: grain-free baked treats full of protein
  • Keep It Up Bar: dog version of a protein bar for those days on the go
  • Dental Stick: long-lasting dental chews that help to remove plaque

Gosbi

A family business founded in 2003, Gosbi is “firmly committed to quality, honesty, and respect for animals”.

The company is based in Spain (which is where I initially found its products) but has quite a broad reach. Today they are present in 45 countries.

Sustainable Steps

With the goal to have a positive impact on the animal world, Gosbi has been making consistent progress against the objectives outlined in its Sustainability Report

In order to effectively reduce its environmental footprint, the company thoroughly analyzes its operations and supply chain to find improvement opportunities.

For example, Gosbi actively works to give everything it uses a second life. In 2022 it reused 100% of its cardboard, 85% of its plastic, and 95% of its wood. Any materials not reused were recycled. The company also continues to incorporate more sustainable packaging throughout its products.

Additionally, Gosbi prioritizes green energy, clean transportation, and local resources throughout its supply chain. The majority of its suppliers, 72%, are from Spain.

Finally, as a company that is in love with animals, Gosbi takes action to improve pet well-being through educational programs, food donations, and adoption initiatives.

Treat Options

Gosbi’s treat recipes are based on the Mediterranean diet and are crafted to promote animal health and welfare. The treats undergo slow cooking processes and contain no artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors.

Currently, there are two main treat product lines:

  • Gosbits: chew treats designed to help with tartar, bad breath, and gum inflammation
  • Gosbits Objective: small, functional treats geared to help with joint pain, allergies, skin health, dental care, and more

Lily’s Kitchen

Just like the founders of Edgard & Cooper, Lily’s owner had a hard time finding dog food that was filled with only natural ingredients. So she started cooking meals from scratch for her beloved pup, and Lily’s Kitchen was born.

Sustainable Steps

In addition to ensuring its food and treats only contain the best ingredients, Lily’s Kitchen is equally concerned with its impact on the planet.

Not only was it the first pet food company in the world to certify as a B Corporation, Lily’s Kitchen also has a comprehensive Impact Report to hold itself accountable.

As part of its net zero strategy and to reduce CO2 emissions, Lily’s Kitchen tracks energy and water usage with its suppliers. It has also introduced meat-free recipe options and only uses energy from renewable sources to power its office.

Additionally, 94% of the company’s packaging materials are recyclable, and it is working to increase this number to 100% by 2025. And to support the community, Lily’s Kitchen educates pet parents on responsible pet care and donates a minimum of 50,000 meals per year to cats and dogs in need.

If these particular treats aren’t available in your country, I highly recommend checking out a local pet store. Many boutique shops carefully select their inventory to offer high-quality products.

In fact, it was through a small, local store in Barcelona that I discovered these companies.

And when you do come across some healthy, sustainable dog treat options, please let me know. I’m 100% sure Phoebe, Franklin, and Froda would love to do some taste testing, and we can help spread the word!

Oh, and in case you’re wondering…the answer is ‘yes’! The treats from these 3 companies passed the taste test. All were thoroughly vetted during some fun, outdoor dog games, and it was a full five-paw rating all around!
